STARKVILLE – With three of the top five 800m times in the nation this year, Mississippi State's men's track and field team broke into the top 10 in the latest TFRI rankings released by the USTFCCCA on Monday.
The No. 10 Bulldogs have now spent at least one week among the top 10 in four of the last five outdoor seasons.
State's 800m trio of Marco Arop, Daniel Nixon and Dejon Devroe swept the podium at the Crimson Tide Invitational while running the Nos. 1, 2 and 5 times in the country this season. Nixon and Devroe joined Arop in the MSU record book, while Arop's time of 1:45.50 stands at No. 2 in the world this season.
MSU's 800m group is ranked No. 1 in the #EventSquad rankings this week, climbing 39 spots with Arop and Devroe's first race of the year. State's average time of 1:48.25 is more than a second faster than No. 2 Iowa (1:49.37).
The Bulldogs also boast top-25 groups in the 400m hurdles (No. 3), 3000m steeplechase (No. 11), 100m (No. 14) and 200m (No. 14).
State's #JavU corps is not eligible for the event rankings with only three athletes, but even with a fourth thrower recording a mark of 0.0m, State would sit at No. 14 nationally. The trio currently averages 78.19m (256-6), which is nearly 11m (36-1) farther than the current national leader Texas A&M (67.24m, 220-7).
Arop's 800m time and Anderson Peters' school record throw of 86.07m in the javelin gives MSU two national event leaders.
MSU's women check in at No. 40 this week. Twelve of the 14 SEC women's teams are among the top 40. Eight of those are among the top 25. State's men are one of five SEC programs in the top 10 and one of nine in the top 25.
