Small Named to Collegiate Baseball Weekly Honor Roll

Small earns third weekly honor roll selection from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in 2019
STARKVILLE – After another dominate start on Friday (April 12) versus Alabama, Mississippi State baseball's redshirt-junior Ethan Small was named to the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Weekly Honor Roll.

A midseason addition to the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Watchlist, the honor is Small's third from the publication this season, as he also earned the distinction from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Feb. 25 after a solid outing against Southern Miss and March 18 following a series-opening win at then-No. 4 Florida.

In the series opener versus Alabama, Small recorded 15 of his 18 outs via the strikeout and allowed multiple base runners in just one inning. He earned his fourth win of the season and helped Mississippi State to its third shutout of the year. Small's career-high 15 strikeouts are the most since Chris Stratton fanned 17 batters against LSU during the 2012 season.

The redshirt-junior struck out at least one strikeout in each of his six innings with multiple Ks in five of six. He struck out the side in four innings, including after loading the bases in the third. At one point, Small retired seven-straight batters, all via the strikeout. His first five outs were strikeouts, followed by a groundout. He then struck out nine in a row before a fielder's choice out. A strikeout and a flyout to right field capped his outing. His final outs breakdown: 15 strikeouts, one flyout and two groundouts.

The left hander scattered three hits and three walks to improve to 4-0 on the season with a 1.84 ERA and 94 strikeouts. His season strikeout total is tied for No. 2 in the NCAA and leads the SEC through the first nine weeks of 2019. His WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) sits at 0.87 and ranks No. 22 nationally and No. 4 in the SEC.

Mississippi State will host Texas Southern in a $2 midweek matchup, with tickets for the game just $2, at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16. The Diamond Dawgs will then hit the road for a three-game series starting on Thursday, April 18 at Arkansas. The series opener will air on ESPNU starting at 8 p.m. CT.
