KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Mississippi State softball (25-16, 3-11 SEC) held an early lead over No. 9/8 Tennessee (31-8, 9-5 SEC), but the Lady Vols rallied back for a 10-2 run-rule victory at Sherri Park Lee Stadium on Saturday.
The Lady Vols plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth to pick up the walk-off victory and claim the series.
Mississippi State tallied three hits in the contest, led by sophomore Mia Davidson, who went 1-for-2 with a home run and two runs scored. Junior Fa Leilua also picked up an extra-base hit in the contest with a first-inning double.
Freshman Grace Fagan (5-7) was tagged with the loss as she allowed four runs off two hits and four walks over her two innings of work. The leftie struck out four. Freshman Kayla Boseman and junior Alyssa Loza also saw action in the circle on Saturday.
The Bulldogs took advantage of a Tennessee error in the top of the first to plate their first run of the series. After a dropped pop up at shortstop, Leilua doubled to left field to put two Bulldogs in scoring position. Senior Kat Moore's ground ball to second drove in a run to give MSU a 1-0 lead.
MSU picked up two quick outs in the bottom of the first before back-to-back walks put two Lady Vols on base. Haley Bearden slugged a double up the middle to clear the bases and put Tennessee in front, 2-1.
After two walks and a passed balled moved two Lady Vols into scoring position with one out in the bottom of the second, senior Emily Heimberger made a great snag on a ground ball at second and flip to first for the second out, but a run would score on the play. Kaitlin Parsons plated the second run of the inning with a single through the right side to extend Tennessee's lead to 4-1.
Davidson cut the Tennessee lead to 3-2 in the top of the third with a solo home run to left field. The bomb was her SEC-leading 21st of the season.
Tennessee answered in the home half of the third, plating four runs with a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded, pinch-hit triple to right field from Madison Pacini.
The Lady Vols knocked back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the fifth. MSU used a fielder's choice to erase one base runner, but a fielding error at first base plated an unearned run for Tennessee. Gracie Osbron knocked the walk-off hit with an RBI single to shortstop.
