KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Despite out-hitting No. 9/8 Tennessee (32-8, 10-5 SEC) at the plate, Mississippi State softball (25-17, 3-12 SEC) fell, 9-2, in the series finale at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium on Sunday.
Sophomore Emily Williams (8-6) held the Lady Vols to five hits, but seven Bulldog errors in the contests plated six unearned runs on Sunday. Over her 5.2 innings of work, Williams struck out four and allowed 12 walks. Junior Candace Denis tossed a third of an inning, recording the final out of the bottom of the sixth with a fly ball to second.
Denis was one of three Bulldogs to record multiple hits on Sunday, joining junior Fa Leilua and senior Kat Moore. Freshman Kayla Boseman went 1-for-3 at the plate with the first home run of her career.
After a scoreless first inning, freshman Kayla Boseman gave the Bulldogs an early lead, leading off the second inning with a solo home run to left field. MSU followed by loading the bases with one out after a Lady Vol error at shortstop and back-to-back singles to left field from senior Bevia Robinson and Denis. Sophomore Mia Davidson extended MSU's lead to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to left field, her third sacrifice of the season.
Tennessee manufactured its first run of the game in the bottom of the third, using four walks in the inning to cut MSU's lead to one. With help from four Mississippi State errors, the Lady Vols plated four unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead.
An RBI single for Kaitlin Parsons and the sixth Bulldog error of the contest added three Tennessee runs in fifth to extend the Lady Vol lead to 8-2. Aubrey Leach's sacrifice fly to left in the sixth scored the final Lady Vol run of the game.
