STARKVILLE – For the third consecutive year, Mississippi State's Nuno Borges is being recognized for his contributions around the community as a member of the 2019 SEC Men's Tennis Community Service Team, the league office announced Wednesday.
All SEC-sponsored sports have had a Community Service Team since 2004, with at-large teams for men's and women's teams being chosen from 1999-2003.
Borges was one of 12 members on this year's team due to his involvement on campus and in the Starkville/MSU community, with one member being selected from 12 of the 13 men's tennis programs in the league. The senior also earned the honor as a sophomore and junior.
The Maia, Porto, Portugal, native has been a key contributor to the community on a local scale, being an active member of MSU's M-Club in an effort to better student-athlete relationships while also volunteering at the Starkville Community Garden on campus.
On a national level, Borges and other Intercollegiate Tennis Association national award winners volunteered at Arthur Ashe Kids Day in conjunction with the U.S. Open in August in New York City. Borges' opportunity there came after he earned the ITA's Arthur Ashe, Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award last May.
In addition to his volunteer work, Borges is an outstanding student, having won MSU's Newsom Award (given to the top student-athlete for each team on campus) in 2018, when he was also awarded the men's sports overall Newsom Award.
On the court, Borges has put together one of the best careers in school history, saving his best season to date for his senior year. This season, the reigning two-time SEC Player of the Year has amassed a 25-2 singles mark, going a perfect 18-0 in singles as part of a career-long 19-match winning streak, en route to matching his career-best ranking at second nationally. In doubles, Borges has been impressive, ranking third in the country alongside Strahinja Rakic. Together, the pair holds a 18-7 overall record with a 13-4 mark in dual matches, 7-2 in SEC play.
Borges and the seventh-ranked Bulldogs have two matches remaining in the 2019 regular season, both on the road. On Friday, State is set for a top-10 battle in College Station against No. 8 Texas A&M, with first serve slated for 6 p.m. MSU will then conclude its regular season at Noon on Sunday in Baton Rouge versus No. 36 LSU.
