TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – After forcing extra innings with a record-setting home run from Mia Davidson, a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eight walked off a 3-2 victory for No. 4/4 Alabama (35-1, 6-1 SEC) over Mississippi State softball (21-11, 1-6 SEC) Friday night at Rhoads Stadium.
With the game locked at 2-2, sophomore Mia Davidson forced extra innings with a solo home run in the top of the seventh to set Mississippi State's sophomore home run record, but the Crimson Tide drew the walk-off walk in the eighth to win game one of the series.
The Davidson sisters did the damage for the Bulldogs as the plate as Mia and Montana drove in both MSU runs to pick up an RBI each. Senior Emily Heimberger turned in the lone multi-hit performance of the night as she went 2-for-3 with two singles.
Sophomore Emily Williams (5-3) had a strong outing in the circle as she tossed the complete game. Over her 7.2 innings of work, she gave up six hits and seven walks while striking out eight. She stranded eight base runners throughout the game and kept Alabama scoreless through the first three innings.
After going down in order in the first, junior Candace Denis knocked the first hit of the game with a one-out infield single to short. After swiping second base, a throwing error on the play allowed Denis to stand safely at third. Redshirt sophomore Montana Davidson brought Denis home with a single to shallow center to give State its first lead of the game.
MSU would go on to load the bases with two outs with help from a pair of seniors after back-to-back singles from Bevia Robinson Heimberger, but a pop up at second limited the damage to just one run.
Leading off the third with a single through the left side off the bat of junior Fa Leilua, MSU looked to add to its lead as senior Kat Moore slugged a well-hit ball to straight-away center, but Alabama's Elissa Brown made the homer-robbing grab to hold State's lead at 1-0.
That lead would hold until the bottom of the fourth. After leading off the inning with a walk, a one-out base hit to third and an MSU error on the play put runners on the corners for the Tide. After a stolen base put two runners in scoring position, sophomore Emily Williams forced a ground ball back to herself for the second out, but a Kaylee Tow two-out single to center cleared the bases to give Alabama a 2-1 lead.
Still down one in the seventh, sophomore Mia Davidson's record-breaking swing tied the game as she slugged her 16th home run of the season with a solo homer to left center. The homer set a new Mississippi State sophomore home run record, surpassing Caroline Seitz's 15 homers set in 2015.
The Crimson Tide led off the bottom of the right with a single to center to get the winning run on board. Reagan Dykes laid down the bunt attempt, but the Bulldog defense went for the out on the lead runner as the late throw allowed both runners to be safe.
After a sacrifice bunt recorded the first out of the inning, Alabama loaded the bases with a walk. Williams battled back with a huge strikeout to record the second out, but Tow drew the bases-loaded walk for the win.
DIVA OF DINGERS
Mia Davidson added another Mississippi State record to her credit as she slugged her 16th home run of the season to break Caroline Seitz's (2015) sophomore home run record. Davidson now holds MSU's freshman and sophomore home run records.
Davidson is also just three home runs shy of tying her own single-season record of 19 that she set during her freshman campaign. With 35 career homers to her credit, Davidson is now two shy of moving into a tie for second in MSU career history.
