STARKVILLE – For the second time in 2019, and the fourth time in his career, Mississippi State's Nuno Borges has been tabbed the SEC Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
The reigning two-time SEC Player of the Year earned the honor after going 2-0 in singles in MSU's 4-3 wins against No. 19 Tennessee and No. 22 Georgia on Friday and Sunday. Borges is the only player in program history to earn conference player of the week laurels four times in a career.
"I'm really excited for Nuno," head coach Matt Roberts said. "He's incredibly deserving of this honor with how well he played in singles last weekend. He's been a great teammate, leader and solid rock for us in both singles and doubles for a while, and it's always great to see guys be rewarded for their hard work."
Borges, a two-time singles All-American, extended his winning streak to a career-long 17 matches after defeating UT's No. 66 Timo Stodder 6-3, 6-3 on Friday.
On Sunday, Borges continued his dominance, ousting No. 21 Emil Reinberg of Georgia in 6-2, 6-1 fashion that gave MSU a 2-1 lead against the Athens-based Bulldogs.
The Maia, Porto, Portugal, native has been stellar in singles action for the Maroon and White in 2019, going a perfect 16-0 in dual match play and 8-0 in the SEC. Against league competition, Borges has dropped only one singles set, claiming 16 of 17.
In doubles, Borges holds a 16-7 overall ledger, including a solid 11-4 mark in dual match play alongside Strahinja Rakic at the No. 1 position with a 5-2 record in SEC action.
With the remainder of his senior season left to play, Borges continues to climb up the Bulldog men's tennis wins charts. While already claiming the No. 1 spot in career doubles pair wins with Rakic, Borges' victories over the weekend helped him claim two more categories – total dual match wins (121) and dual match singles victories (72).
Borges ranks at or near the top in three other categories, including overall wins (6th-168), singles wins (3rd-107) and dual match doubles wins (t6th-49).
Next Up For MSU …
The Bulldogs will head to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to take on the 38th-ranked Razorbacks at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Billingsley Tennis Center.
