CONWAY, Ark. – With the game tied at 3-3 in the seventh inning, senior Bevia Robinson lifted Mississippi State softball (21-10) to a 4-3 victory over Central Arkansas (17-17) at Farris Field Tuesday night.
Â
Robinson's lone hit of the night was an RBI single to left field in the seventh to plate the winning run for the Bulldogs as State would hang on for the 4-3 victory. Sophomore Carter Spexarth turned in the lone multi-hit performance of the game as she went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
Â
Freshman Kayla Boseman turned in a strong performance in the circle. Through 5.1 innings, Boseman allowed three hits, two walks and just one earned run while striking out five. Freshman Grace Fagan got the victory to improve to 4-5. Over 1.2 inning, Fagan did not allow a hit and struck out two.
Â
After trading a scoreless first inning, Central Arkansas earned the first base runner of the game with a one-out walk in the bottom of the second. After moving the runner into scoring position with a ground ball to second, Tyla Vernon doubled to left center with two outs to give UCA a 1-0 lead.
Â
UCA's Kamryn Coleman retired 10 consecutive Bulldogs in order, until sophomore Mia Davidson broke through in the top of the fourth with a double down the left-field line. A misplayed ball at shortstop allowed Davidson to score to lock the game up at 1-1. With two outs, Spexarth made the Bears pay with a two-run home run to left field to give MSU a 3-1 lead, its first lead of the game.
Â
With two outs, UCA got a base runner on board via hit by pitch. The Bears would take advantage of a MSU throwing error to plate a run to cut the Bulldog lead to 3-2.
Â
The Bears led off the sixth with a walk and moved the tying run into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. MSU brought in left-hander Fagan into the circle to work out of the jam, but a couple Bulldog errors allowed the tying run to score.
Â
Spexarth led off the seventh with a single to shallow center. After being lifted for pinch runner freshman Chloe Malau'ulu, redshirt sophomore Montana Davidson laid down the sacrifice bunt to move the go-ahead run into scoring position. With two outs, Robinson knocked a single to left field to bring home Malau'ulu to put MSU back in front, 4-3.
Â
Facing the top of the UCA lineup, Fagan turned in a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the seventh to record the fourth victory of her freshman season.
