STARKVILLE – Entering the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays this past weekend, only three athletes in the world had thrown the javelin 82.00m (269-0.0) or more in 2019.
That all changed on Saturday, as Anderson Peters hurled the implement 82.64m (271-1.0) on his first attempt to start off his NCAA title defense by taking the NCAA lead in the javelin. Peters' mark currently ranks second in the world.
Reigning USATF javelin champion Curtis Thompson's throw of 75.81m (248-8.) puts the senior in second in the NCAA and 29th in the world, while newcomer Tyriq Horsford threw the implement 68.38m (224-4.). Horsford's mark was the eighth-best among collegians in the javelin and currently ranks 17th in the NCAA.
Karson Kowalchuk's wind-aided 100m time of 10.38 is currently tied for 14th in the NCAA rankings, while Bulldogs also earned three of the top 10 times in the men's 400m hurdles.
Charles Brockman III led the way with the week's top mark at 51.23, which ranks No. 1 in the SEC, No. 4 in the NCAA and 26th in the world, while Rasheed Tatham (51.52) and Malcum Tatum (51.98) turned in the No. 6 and No. 10 times of the week, respectively. Both Tatham and Tatum rank inside the top 20 in the NCAA, ranking 10th and 17th.
In the men's 3000m steeplechase, Stephen Jones posted the SEC's top mark of the season to date with a run of 9:06.18 on Friday. That time ranks ninth in the NCAA and was the second-best mark of the week. Caden Foos clocked the eighth-fastest time this past week, running 9:17.95, which ranks 23rd in the NCAA.
A pair of men's relay squads posted times that ranked among the top 10 marks of the week, with State's 4x100m team of Lester Miller, Terryon Conwell, Karson Kowalchuk and Cameron Crump ranking eighth at 39.91. That time currently ranks 13th in the NCAA. In the 4x400m to close out the Bulldog Relays, MSU's 4x400m squad of Tatham, Crump, Okheme Moore and Conwell ran 3:10.88, which ranked as the nation's 10th-best time of the week and is 20th in the NCAA.
On the women's side, a trio of Bulldogs rank among the NCAA's top 25, led by Alexis Farley, who ranks sixth in the NCAA and 26th in the world in the triple jump at 13.02m (42-8.75).
