STARKVILLE – Holding Mississippi State softball (20-10, 1-5 SEC) to five hits, No. 17/13 Auburn (28-5, 5-1 SEC) won Sunday's rubber game, 9-0, in five innings at Nusz Park to claim the series victory.
Three Bulldogs combined for State's five hits in the series finale as sophomore Mia Davidson and sophomore Emily Heimberger tallied two singles each against Auburn's Ashlee Swindle.
Mississippi State used four pitchers in Sunday's contest. Freshman Grace Fagan (3-5) was tagged with the loss. She faced four batters in the first inning, giving up two walks and two hits. She was charged with four runs. Junior Alyssa Loza carries the bulk of the load in the circle, tossing two complete innings.
Swindle (6-3) earned the win for the Tigers as she shutout MSU's lethal batting order. Swindle scattered five hits and a walk and struck out only two in the outing.
After leading off the top of the first with back-to-back walks, an Alyssa Rivera single to right and a Tannon Snow double to left brought home two runs for the Tigers. Kendall Veach homered to straight-away center to give Auburn a 5-0 lead after one.
MSU kept Auburn off the board until the third inning as back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning brought home a run. A Mississippi State fielding error brought home the second run of the inning to push the Tiger lead to 7-0.
A pass ball and sacrifice fly to right field plated the final two runs of the inning for Auburn.
State tried to fight off the run-rule in the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back singles from Hemberger and Davidson, but a ground out back to the pitcher kept the Bulldogs off the board to secure the series for Auburn.
ON DECK
Mississippi State returns to non-conference action on Tuesday, March 26 as the Bulldogs trek to Conway, Arkansas, to face Central Arkansas at 5 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed on the Bear Nation Network and requires a paid subscription to watch.
