CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Freshman Ford Clegg finished tied for 19th Sunday at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate to lead the Mississippi State men's golf team, which finished 10th.
The reigning SEC Freshman of the Week, Clegg just missed his fifth consecutive top-15 finish. The Birmingham, Alabama, native had his best round of the weekend on Sunday, carding an even-par 72 which included three consecutive birdies to finish up the back nine.
As a team, State also had its best performance in the final round, with a 5-over 293. Unfortunately for MSU, it wasn't enough to climb the leaderboard as the group fell into a 10th-place finish with a combined 25-over 889 total.
Junior Garrett Johnson also shot a 72 in the final round to finish up as MSU's next best player, with a share of 31st.
Junior Peng Pichaikool and senior Ross Bell finished tied for 36th at 8-over par and redshirt freshman Ben Nelson, in his first collegiate start, carded a 12-over score. Pichaikool closed out his weekend with birdies on 14, 16 and 18 before heading back to Starkville.
After playing tournaments on three straight weekends, the Golf Dawgs get a break next week before its next tournament. On Friday, April 5, MSU will begin play at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tennessee. State will then close the regular season by hosting the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship April 15-16.

MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith:
"This has definitely been a humbling week for our team. I am proud of the way the guys fought, but, ultimately, we didn't do a good enough job facing adversity. Ford and Garrett did a nice job battling all day in some tough conditions. I know that we will learn and grow from this. It's important that we take ownership of this week and get better from it. This season is far from over. This was our next step and we will take the positives from it. If we want to become the team I know we can be, our leadership and accountability has to be better. We have a lot of hungry guys on this team and I know they will bounce back."
