State Sets Sights on Schenkel Invite
March 14, 2019 | Men's Golf
STATESBORO, Ga. – Less than a week following its win at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, the Mississippi State men's golf team will look to carry its momentum into the 40th annual Schenkel Invitational.
The three-day event at the par-72, 6,947-yard Forest Heights Country Club will be played Friday through Sunday with a round per day. Mississippi State will begin its run at 9 a.m. CT from the first hole tee. Live results will be available via Golfstat.com.
"It's good to be back in Statesboro this weekend for one of the great college events," MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith said. "The hospitality and everything else about the tournament are first class. We are excited to get back out and compete."
"This week will be big for us as we look to continue to mold and shape what we will become," Smith said.
Now ranked 50th by both Golfstat.com and Golfweek, MSU is the top-rated team in the field.
The top four Bulldogs from MSU's win at Desert Mountain return for the Schenkel which include individual medalist Garrett Johnson. Freshman Ford Clegg and junior Peng Pichaikool, both returning, each earned top-10 finishes at Desert Mountain, while senior Ross Bell took a share of 22nd.
Pichaikool is the 27th-ranked golfer in the Golstat.com Top 100, and the top-ranked individual in the upcoming field.
Senior Austin Rose is the only new face on the MSU lineup card as he gets set to make his fourth start of the season.
Redshirt freshman Ben Nelson will once again play as an individual, having done so at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate.
The Golf Dawgs will look to improve on their success in last year's edition of the Schenkel, as they took fourth place with a 13-under-851. Both Johnson and Pichaikool participated in that event.
The 14-team field includes College of Charleston, East Tennessee State, Georgia State, Kentucky, Lipscomb, Maryland, Middle Tennessee State, Minnesota, Notre Dame, UAB, UCF, Virginia Tech and the host, Georgia Southern.

We are excited to get back out and compete. We have been talking all week about going out and playing Mississippi State golf. That means we are tough mentally and stay in our process not worrying about anything except what we can control. Nothing changes because of previous weeks. This is our next step. This week will be big for us as we look to continue to mold and shape what we will become."
