Softball Rounds out Sunday with Bulldog Slamboree Sweep

STARKVILLE – In the final tune-up before conference action, Mississippi State softball (19-5) turned in an undefeated weekend sweeping Louisiana Tech and Mississippi Valley State to round out the Bulldog Slamboree at Nusz Park.
Trailing two runs in the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs mounted a three-run rally with senior Kat Moore delivering the two-run single to left field to knocked off Louisiana Tech (16-7) by a 5-4 final.
Freshman Kayla Boseman and sophomore Emily Williams combined for the sixth shutout of the season as the Bulldogs blanked Mississippi Valley State (1-16), 3-0.
Moore closed Sunday, going 4-for-8 at the plate with two RBIs. Senior Emily Heimberger added three hits over MSU's doubleheader and led the team with three RBIs.
In Sunday's opener, the Lady Techsters and the Bulldogs were locked scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Louisiana Tech went out in from with a solo home run to straightaway center from Lindsay Edwards.
The Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the fifth, leading off the inning with a hit by pitch to redshirt sophomore Montana Davidson. Redshirt freshman Kinsey Goelz moved pincher runner sophomore Grace Dabbs into scoring position.
A dropped ball by the first baseman on senior Bevia Robinson's ground ball to short put runners on the corners for the top of the lineup. Heimberger just missed knocking a home run, but her fly ball to left center bounced off the top of the wall for a double to score Dabbs and tie the game. A wild pitch would allow Robinson to score and give MSU a 2-1 lead.
State's lead would hold until the top of the seventh when the Lady Techsters plated three runs off a two-out rally to jump back in front, 4-2.
Sophomore Carter Spexarth kicked off MSU's come-from-behind rally with a pinch-hit single to center field and was lifted for pinch runner freshman Chloe Malau'ulu. After Robinson singled to left field, Heimberger cut Tech's lead to 4-3 with an RBI single to center. Sophomore Mia Davidson loaded up the for Moore with an infield single to second base, and more delivered the game-winning blow with a two-run single to left field.
Relief Pitcher Alyssa Loza earned the victory to improve to 6-1 on the season. The junior gave up three runs off four hits and three walks while striking out one in the contest. Freshman Grace Fagan earned the start and tossed the first four innings and gave up just one run off three hits and three walks with a strikeout.
Pitching dominating the first two innings in the Slamboree finale against MVSU before the Bulldogs pushed across a run in the third. With two outs, junior Fa Leilua got on base with help of a fielding error before back-to-back infield singles from Moore and junior Candace Denis loaded the bases. Spexarth drew the bases-loaded walk to give State a 1-0 advantage.
MSU added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth with Montana Davidson leading off the inning with a single up the middle. After pinch runner freshman Jamie Gregg swiped second, Heimberger singled up the middle to plate a run. Heimberger would score with off a Robinson double up the middle to give MSU a 3-0 lead.
Boseman and Williams dominating in the circle to secure the shutout. Boseman improved to 2-0 after tossing four scoreless innings. The freshman gave up just two hits and struck out six in her second start of the season. Williams tallied her third save of the year, tossing the final three innings. The right-hander allowed just one hit and one walk and fanned five Devilettes.

MSU begins conference play next weekend in Lexington, Kentucky with a three-game series against the Wildcats. The series begins on Friday, March 15 with first pitch on the SEC Network + set for 5 p.m. CT>
