PEORIA, Ariz. – Mississippi State women's golf dominated on the course on Day 1 of the Westbrook Invitational, held at the par-72, 6,432-yard Vista Course at Westbrook Village Club, on Sunday. The Bulldogs are in second place heading into Monday's second day of competition.
State carded 39 birdies during the first two rounds for a 6-under par finish on the day.
Head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm likes the position her team is in going into the final round.
"We did a great job today in several areas," said Brown-Lemm. "We have worked very hard on body language intentionally and being where your feet are. Meaning what happened a hole back doesn't matter, and what is to come doesn't matter. We did an exceptional job today. This team is doing the work from practice, nutrition, hydration and mental skill building. They are paying attention to the details and with that we have put ourselves in a position to win a golf tournament."
Sophomore Blair Stockett posted a 71 and 70 in the first and second rounds, respectively, which placed her in a tie for eleventh. She fired three birdies on the back nine of the second round to finish the day and looks forward to continuing her momentum Monday.
"I hit the ball well all day, and I really felt like I left some shots out there," said Stockett. "I'm excited to get back out tomorrow and go to work."
Stockett's teammate Ela Grimwood posted a career-low score of 69 in the first round of the invitational. She is tied for 15th with a 2-under par, 142.
Sophomore Aubree Jones, junior Clara Moyano, freshman Hannah Levi and senior Katie Holt are all tied for 27th going into Day 2. They are 1-over par, with a score of 145.
Nebraska is in the lead with a 13-under par, 563. Ohio State's Aneka Seumanutafa leads the player field with a 7-under par, 137.
Play will resume Monday at 9:30 a.m. CT with a shotgun start. Follow along on BirdieFire.com
