White Takes Home Intrasquad Meet Title

STARKVILLE – White claimed the Mississippi State track and field intrasquad meet behind nine first-place finishes on the track on Saturday.

White amassed 129 points throughout the 26-event meet and took home 12 event victories. Gray finished 47 points behind White with 82, and Maroon tallied 70 points.

"The past two days were really, really important for this program and for this coaching staff," head coach Chris Woods said. "We saw a lot of positive things in the past two days. I saw a lot of people stepping up all over the place, doing events that he or she normally doesn't do. Somebody stepped up and said 'I'll do it.' Those are the things that will help us win championships."

Faith Gilbert led the charge for White on Saturday, tallying 10 total points, winning both the 60m and 300m. In addition to Gilbert's victories, White won the men's and women's 2000m, men's 300m and all three relays.

White had clinched the meet following the men's 300m with just the women's event and relays remaining. At that point, White led Gray by 25 points with only 23 left on the board.

Shayla Broughton fueled Gray on Saturday, taking home the 60m hurdles title and posting a second-place finish in the women's 300m. Broughton and Jesse Henderson led all scorers with 19 and 16 points overall.

Three different Maroon athletes won events on day two. Karson Kowalchuk took home the men's 60m title, while Dejon Devroe and Destini Pickens posted first-place finishes in the 600m. Overall, Asia Poe led Maroon's production with 13 points over the two days.

The meet used a 5-3-2-1 scoring format, with the relays being scored 5-3-1. Teams could not score more than twice in a single event. For example, if Maroon took first, second and third, the fourth-place athlete would be bumped up to third for scoring purposes and collect two points.

This occurred in the men's 2000m as White finished first, second and fourth, but Maroon's fifth-place finisher was awarded the final point.

State will open the 2019 indoor track and field slate Jan. 10 in Birmingham, Alabama, at the UAB Blazer Invite.
