STARKVILLE – Mississippi State track and field will showcase its talents for the first time this season at the Bulldogs' second annual intrasquad meet on Thursday, Dec. 5 and Saturday, Dec. 7.
The student-athletes have been divided into three teams, Maroon, White and Gray, and will compete against each other in a scored meet that will be open to fans. Many athletes remained on the same team from last year's meet. Coaches assigned athletes to primary events, but in a unique twist, the athletes met as teams to place each other in secondary events where they thought they could pick up some extra points.
The meet will use a 5-3-2-1 scoring format, with the relays being scored 5-3-1. Teams may not score more than twice in a single event. For example, if Maroon took first, second and third, the fourth-place athlete would be bumped up to third for scoring purposes and collect two points.
"This meet is important because it gives our coaches and our athletes a chance to evaluate where we are up to this point after a long training season," head coach Chris Woods said. "It gives us an opportunity to know what to expect as we get ready to go into the Christmas break and prepare us for the indoor season starting in January. For the majority of our kids, this is the first time they've had a competition since June, so I know they're excited about it. I'm excited about it."
One male and one female athlete were named captains for each team. The Maroon squad is led by sophomore Asia Poe and senior Dejon Devroe. Senior Charlotte Cayton-Smith will lead the Gray squad alongside junior Terryon Conwell. The White team is captained by senior Vince Castillo and junior Sylvia Russell.
"I hope we have a larger turnout than we had last year, and we had a really good turnout for an intrasquad meet last year," Woods added. "We've got a lot of newcomers and giving them the opportunity to compete against collegiate athletes allows them to get the first little bit of nervousness that a freshman normally has out of the way. All of the coaches are really excited about what's going to happen on Thursday and Saturday."
The Bulldogs will contest field events on Thursday beginning at 1:30 p.m. CT, with some surprising entries in the mix. For example, distance runner Eryk Yunk and 800m runner Kenya Small will attempt to score points in the weight throw. Indoor field events will be closed to the public. Full team rosters and entries can be found on HailState.com.
Saturday's action kicks off at 1:00 p.m. with a 2000m run. The final gun will fire at 3 p.m. for a mixed 4x400m with two men and two women running alternating legs for each team.
