STARKVILLE – A defender from Montgomery, Ohio, Sydney Strunk learned the true definition of southern hospitality when she stepped foot in Mississippi.
"Coming into a place like this having never been to the South before, things are so different up North than they are here. I think the thing that stood out to me was that this was like a family. It was such an easy decision coming here and meeting all the girls, it just clicked. I absolutely love it."
From the day she began playing as a little kid, soccer has always reminded Strunk of the most important thing in her life, her family. Soccer would always make the bad days into good ones.
But soccer wasn't always easy. In high school, she lost her passion for the game, but stepping onto the field at Mississippi State immediately reminded why she loved the game.
"I realized soccer is my way of getting through things," she said. "It reminds me of my family, so anytime I have something tough going on, I resort to soccer. I think that's what really brought me to Mississippi State. Family is such a big thing here. I wanted soccer to always be revolving around family."
MSU has truly become her home away from home and not just because of her sport. The support for all the athletic teams at MSU has been one of her favorite things to witness. She has become a huge supporter of the football team in her first semester on campus.
"Everything here is just an excitement," Strunk said. "No matter whether it's soccer, football, basketball, or all of the others, everyone here cares about every sport. Every sport is so big. It is definitely way different than sports back home. The weather is nicer. The people are way friendlier, and it's just a lot more welcoming. People are just happier here."
