Carter Records Double-Double In Exhibition Win vs. Lubbock Christian

STARKVILLE – Sophomore Jessika Carter finished with a double-double to lead No. 10 Mississippi State to a 78-57 win against Lubbock Christian at Humphrey Coliseum on Monday night, concluding the preseason slate for the Bulldogs.
Carter led all players with 27 points and 13 rebounds, both of which would have marked career highs. The forward also tallied two blocks and a steal on the night in 29 minutes of action.
After a close first half, Mississippi State stepped things up on the defensive end of the floor to put the game away, finishing with 12 steals and 10 blocks while only allowing the Lady Chaps to score 16 total points after intermission.
Graduate Jordan Danberry finished with a solid outing, recording 12 points, six steals and four rebounds. The junior duo of Chloe Bibby and Andra Espinoza-Hunter each knocked down three 3-pointers as MSU shot 50 percent (7-of-14) from beyond the arc. Bibby finished the night with 11 points, five rebounds and three blocks, while Espinoza-Hunter added 10 points.
Sophomore Myah Taylor dished out eight assists without a turnover and grabbed six boards. Freshman Rickea Jackson had 10 rebounds to go with six points and two blocks.
Lubbock Christian held an early lead after the first quarter. Senior Maddi Chitsey dropped 16 points and hit a deep three to give the Lady Chaps a 25-22 advantage at the break. MSU held Chitsey scoreless for the remainder of the game.
The Bulldogs quickly regained the lead in the second quarter behind lockdown defensive play. State recorded four blocks and two steals in the frame to disrupt Lubbock Christian's offense. Bibby led the charge with three blocks for the half to go along with five points.
Carter led State in scoring with 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting to go with five rebounds. Espinoza-Hunter added seven points behind a pair of 3-pointers to help MSU enter halftime with a 43-41 lead.
Mississippi State continued the strong showing on defense in the third quarter, holding the Lady Chaps scoreless for the final six minutes of the period. The Bulldogs held LCU to just 19 percent shooting in the period and used a 12-0 run to take a 64-49 lead.
MSU held Lubbock Christian to just 3-of-10 shooting in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. State outscored the Lady Chaps 26-8 during the final 16 minutes to claim the 78-57 victory.
The Bulldogs held a 55-39 advantage on the glass, including 23 offensive rebounds, and outscored LCU in the paint, 42-28.
State will be back in action Saturday, as the Bulldogs host Southern Miss to begin the 2019-20 campaign at Humphrey Coliseum at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on SEC Network +.
