STARKVILLE – Everything is bigger in Texas. Coming from the Lone Star state, midfielder April Berry put up big minutes while collecting assists that still fill the Mississippi State soccer record book.
The Arlington, Texas, native hit the ground running as soon as she arrived in Starkville. As a freshman, Berry started all 21 matches and tallied the third-highest number of minutes on the team, with 1,761. Her minutes are the fifth-most by any freshman in school history.
In the season opener against Tulane, she recorded her first career point with an assist on the game-winning goal. Three weeks later she scored her first goal in a 6-2 win against Jacksonville State.
Berry's sophomore season was cut short by an injury, but that did not stop her from threatening the net. Out of 16 shots, 10 were on goal. She totaled six points, with four assists and one goal and was again among the team leaders in minutes, finishing fourth with 1,442. In SEC play, she assisted the game-winning goal against Vanderbilt. As a junior, she saw action in all 20 games.
A breakout senior season awaited in 2004. Berry played 1,793 minutes which remains seventh in MSU single-season history. She started 21 matches and tallied three goals and five assists on the year. She scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win against Georgia State and received SEC Academic Honor Roll recognition for the second straight year.
Prior to State's first NCAA Tournament berth in 2018, April Berry was one of just four players to have played in every postseason game in program history, starting SEC Tournament matches in both 2001 and 2004.
For her career, Berry is tied for seventh in MSU history with 11 assists and is fourth in both games started (73) and games played (80). Her 11 assists are second among all Bulldog midfielders. She finished her career with 23 points and six goals.
