BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After posting double-doubles in back-to-back games, Jessika Carter has been named the SEC Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Carter dominated in 10th-ranked Mississippi State's wins over Murray State and Troy, averaging 22.0 points, 16.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. It's the first time the Waverly Hall, Georgia, native has been honored by the conference.
Â
Against Murray State, the sophomore forward recorded the first double-double of her career with 25 points and 18 rebounds, both of which are personal bests. Carter set the tone early in the game, notching the double-double before the end of the first quarter to help State set the MSU single-game scoring record with 124 points against the Racers.
Â
She followed that performance up with 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting, 14 rebounds and four blocks as MSU dropped 122 points against Troy. The Bulldogs improved to 4-0 on the year with the victory against the Trojans.
Â
For the season, Carter ranks inside the top five in the SEC in both scoring (18.8 ppg/5th) and rebounding (12.3 rpg/2nd). She has led State in rebounding all four games and is the only player to have scored in double-figures in each contest.
Â
To put into perspective how well Carter is playing, 2019 SEC Player of the Year Teaira McCowan was averaging 17.5 points and 12.8 rebounds per game through the first four games last year. McCowan played 98 minutes during the stretch, while Carter has seen action in 97 minutes and is shooting a 67-percent clip from the floor.
Â
Up next, the Bulldogs are on the road for the first time this season, as they head to the capital to take on Jackson State on Thursday night at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on the MSU Radio Network. Mississippi State currently has the nation's second-longest road winning streak at nine games.Â
Â
For fans in the Jackson area, a "Meet and Greet" will be head on Wednesday, November 20 at the Hilton Jackson, located at 1001 East County Line Road, Jackson, MS 3921. The reception will be from 6-7, featuring head coach Vic Schaefer and autographs from the Bulldogs.
