Bulldogs Set Single-Game Scoring Record in 124-43 Win vs. Murray State

STARKVILLE – The 10th-ranked Mississippi State women's basketball team put on an offensive display Friday night at Humphrey Coliseum, breaking the MSU single-game scoring record with a 124-43 victory against Murray State.

The previous record was set on February 24, 1986, when Mississippi State defeated Judson College, 117-35. State was just one point shy of tying the program record for margin of victory, which stands at 82 points set in the contest against Judson College.
The Bulldogs (3-0) were on fire on the offensive end of the floor all night, shooting a blazing 52 percent (47-of-91) from the field. Six players finished the game with double-digit scoring. Forward Jessika Carter led the way with a dominant 25-point, 18-rebound performance, both marking career highs. It was her first career double-double.

Yemiyah Morris finished the game with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting to go along with four rebounds and three blocks, while Promise Taylor added 10 points, seven boards and two blocks. Mississippi State dominated the paint all game long, outscoring the Racers, 76-18, down low. On the glass, State had a 56-33 advantage and scored 35 second-chance points on 27 offensive rebounds.

Rickea Jackson eclipsed double-digit points for the first time in her MSU career with 16 points. Myah Taylor and Andra Espinoza-Hunter rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points each.

Mississippi State had a balanced offensive attack all game long, outscoring Murray State off the bench, 62-22. MSU took care of the ball as well, assisting on 24 shots while only turning the ball over eight times. State also finished the game 22-of-29 from the charity stripe.

Defensively, the Bulldogs were relentless all night long and used that to lead to easy buckets on the other end of the floor. State scored 47 points off 34 turnovers forced and used its height to record nine blocks. Jordan Danberry set the tone early, tallying six of MSU's 15 total steals. The graduate guard also finished with five points, five assists, three rebounds and a block.

For the game, Murray State shot just 30 percent from the field and was held to 1-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc.

The first quarter was all Mississippi State, as the Bulldogs took a commanding 34-7 lead after beginning the frame with a 22-2 run. Carter was on fire early, dropping 12 points and 10 rebounds in the period to lead all players. State shot 54 percent from the field in the quarter compared to just 22 percent by Murray State.

The Bulldogs continued to control the game in the second stanza by dominating the paint. For the half, State held a 26-16 advantage on the glass and outscored the Racers 36-6 in the paint. Murray State found a better groove on offense in the second quarter, but Mississippi State still entered halftime with a 57-23 lead.

Mississippi State blew the game wide open in the third quarter, outscoring the Racers (1-2) by a 32-4 margin in the stanza. The offensive display didn't stop there, as State went on to drop a season-high 35 points in the final period to complete the wire-to-wire win.

Overall, MSU finished with three quarters of 32 or more points while holding Murray State to seven or less points in two of the periods.
