STARKVILLE – In just two years playing soccer in Starkville, Amy Van Zandt left her name littered throughout the Mississippi State record book.
Her impact was immediate. After her freshman year debut in 2001, then-head coach Neil McGuire described her as "a major threat" in the 2002 media guide.
The Grapevine, Texas, native holds school records for career points per game (1.60), goals per game (0.63), shots per game (3.63) and shots on goal per game (2.54). Additionally, Van Zandt holds top-10 marks in numerous categories.
The dangerous striker's career ranks fifth in points (56), tied for third in goals (22), sixth in assists (12), third in shots on goal (89), and seventh in shots (127). While Van Zandt's career records are certainly remarkable given her short tenure with State, a closer look at MSU's class records paints a picture of the hottest start in Starkville in program history.
Van Zandt holds freshman records for points and goals and ranks second among first-year players in assists behind the other half of State's outstanding 2001 duo, Jessi Moore. She earned second team All-SEC honors. Along with Moore, who was a first team honoree, it marked the first time and one of just three seasons in school history that two Bulldogs were named all-conference.
The 2001 squad, led by Van Zandt and Moore, won the SEC West title to reach postseason for the first time in school history. The duo combined for 77 points. Van Zandt led the squad in goals (15) while Moore took charge of the assists (16).
Van Zandt played in all 21 games for the Bulldogs that year and was recognized by Soccer Buzz with a sport on the Freshman All-America third team. She was also named to the All-Central Region second team by Soccer Buzz and was a third team NSCAA All-Central Region selection.
She returned for a second season and scribbled a few more entries in the record book. Among sophomores, her points that year rank fifth, and she is fourth in shots and goals.
State struggled that season, going 6-13-1, and Van Zandt would leave Starkville at the end of the season. She posted 17 points on the back of seven goals and three assists and led the Bulldogs in shots once again, firing 51 with 35 on frame in her final season.
