FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT MISSISSIPPI STATE
1. Mississippi State used a 33-6 flurry over the last 14 minutes ignited by a 17 consecutive points during the final 3:26 of the game to fuel a 67-58 comeback victory over Sam Houston State last Friday. The Bulldogs pushed their SEC-leading non-conference home winning streak to 24 games and erased a halftime deficit for the 16th time under Ben Howland. Once again, it was Tyson Carter who did the heavy lifting for Mississippi State as he pumped in 28 points and handed out six assists. The 28 points pushed him past Greg Grim (1978-79-80), Marcus Grant (1992-93-94-95) and Winsome Frazier (2002-03-04-05) into sole possession of 40th place on the program's all-time scoring list. Carter heads into Thursday's contest is 28 points shy of becoming the 40th overall and seventh player under Howland to reach 1,000 career points in program history.
2. As a team, Mississippi State is shooting a SEC-best 52.4 percent from the floor through two games which is the highest mark of the Ben Howland era and the program's third-best effort dating back to 2004-05. The Bulldogs also have dished out assists on 59.3 percent of their field goals during their opening two games. That mark also is the best under Howland and State's third-highest clip since the 2004-05 season. The 2008-09 team started the season with assists on 67.3 percent of its baskets.
3. Reggie Perry is a preseason All-America selection by Lindy's (First Team), Street & Smith (Second Team) and Athlon Magazines (Third Team) in addition to being named a consensus All-SEC First-Team honoree. He is coming off a sensational summer where he won a gold medal and captured tournament MVP honors with the USA U19 Team at the 2019 FIBA World Cup in Greece. Perry also had the opportunity to attend the NBA Draft Combine and workout for several NBA franchises. He notched his SEC-leading 10th career double-double among active players with 10 points and equaled a career-high with 14 rebounds. Perry's 10.5 rebounds per game are second among SEC leaders.
4. With his 28-point performance, Tyson Carter became the seventh player to register 20-plus points in the first two games of the season since 1980-81. The senior has amassed 51 points over his two games, which ties Jeff Malone (1983-83) and trails Hubert Henderson (1986-87) for most points during the opening two games of a season going back to 1980-81. Carter is a fixture on the SEC leaderboard during the young season with 25.5 points (2nd), 4.5 assists (4th) and 3.5 steals per game (T-1st). He also has drained 4.0 treys per game (T-2nd) on a 53.3 percent clip (4th).
5. D.J. Stewart Jr. has racked up 23 of Mississippi State's 29 points off the bench on the season … He provided 11 of his season's best 15 points during the second half of the Sam Houston State game and buried a pair of free throws inside the final minute to give the Bulldogs a two-possession lead … Abdul Ado has managed a pair of multi-block efforts and has amassed 131 career rejections over his first 69 career games … He has climbed all the way up to eighth place on MSU's all-time list, and his 1.90 blocks per game are third in program history only behind legendary shot blockers Jarvis Varnado (2007-08-09-10) and Erick Dampier (1994-95-96) … Ado's 3.5 blocks per game are tied for second in the SEC rankings and his five blocks against Sam Houston State were one shy of his career-high … Robert Woodard II has been steady at the start of his sophomore campaign with 9.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game … Last time out, his 10 points versus Sam Houston State matched his second-highest career output … Iverson Molinar has notched 8.0 points and 3.5 assists per game … He became the third freshmen opening night starter at MSU under Howland to reach double figures when he scored 14 points against FIU … The Panama native joined teammates Tyson Carter and Nick Weatherspoonn who scored 17 and 11 points, respectively, during their debuts … KeyShawn Feazell has been a solid contributor with 3.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game … He hauled down a career-high nine rebounds against Sam Houston State in 21 minutes of court time … Mississippi State will be without Nick Weatherspoon who came away with 9.6 points per game last season due to a violation of team rules … He is scheduled to make his season debut versus New Mexico State on Dec. 22 in Jackson.
