State Tallies Seven Wins On Day One of Roberta Alison Fall Classic

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Mississippi State women's tennis recorded seven wins Friday on day one of the Roberta Alison Fall Classic.
In doubles which opened the day, Emma Antonaki and Valeria Nikolaev came out on top against East Tennessee State's Raquel Amaro and Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga 6-3 in the Hilde Otterman Draw. They will compete against Yu Fujioka and Nikola Kohoutova of South Alabama in the semifinals on Saturday.
State's pair of Marta Falceto and Tamara Racine posted an impressive 6-2 victory over UT Martin's Amelia Campbell and Daphne Pratt. On Saturday, Falceto and Racine will face Paola Cortez Varga and Taylor Dean from Kansas State in the semifinals of the Millie Begovic Draw.
The MSU tandem of Sara Lizariturry and Meredith Roberts opened the event in a hard-fought doubles battle but ultimately fell to Indiana's Annabelle Andrinopoulous and Jelly Bozovic 7-5 in the Leslie Grossman Draw. They will face Chie Kezuka and Thasaporn Naklo of Iowa State in the consolation semifinals Saturday.
MSU's 41st-ranked Antonaki opened singles action for the Bulldogs. The sophomore fell to Ayana Akli of Maryland 6-3, 6-3 in the Nancy Harris Draw. In a consolation semifinal match, the sophomore was defeated by Thasaporn Naklo of Iowa State 6-2, 6-1. She will meet Laura Bente of Memphis in another consolation clash Saturday.
Racine recorded the Bulldogs' first singles victory over Chie Kezuka of Iowa State 6-1, 7-6(1). In the semifinals of the Alexa Guarachi Draw, Racine was handed a 6-4, 6-2 loss by Northwestern's Christina Hand. Racine will compete against Ava Markham from Wisconsin in a consolation match Saturday.
In the Alice Tunaru Draw, Falceto earned a win over Northwestern's Hannah McColgan 6-3, 6-4. In the semifinals, the true freshman dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Eleni Louka of Clemson. Falceto will face Indiana's Lexi Kubas in a consolation match Saturday.
After taking set one, State's Nikolaev fell in a three-set marathon 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 to Indiana's Alexandra Staiculescu in the Mary Anne Macfarlane Draw. In the consolation semifinals, the redshirt freshman defeated Katherine Cao of Memphis 6-4, 6-4 - her first collegiate singles victory. Nikolaev will return to action Saturday against Troy's Matea Mihaljevic in the consolation finals.
Lizariturry notched a tough three-set victory over Kennesaw State's Paola Cortez Vargas 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in the Amy Mascotti Draw before dropping a similarly tight decision to Indiana's Michelle Mckamey 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Lizariturry will prepare to compete against Laura Marti of Clemson Saturday in a consolation match.
In the Lori Smith Draw, Roberts was overturned by Yunuen Elizarraras of East Tennessee State 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 before Kennesaw State's Juliana Castellanos defaulted to the Bulldog in consolation action. Roberts will meet UT Martin's Mizuki Sakurai Saturday in the consolation finals.
The Bulldogs will be back in action for day two of the Roberta Alison Fall Classic Saturday, beginning with doubles at 10 a.m. CT and singles to follow.
