STARKVILLE – A four-time team captain for the Bulldogs, Morganne Grimes made a name for herself at Mississippi State. The defender from Fayetteville, Georgia, knew she wanted to be successful both on and off the field.
Earning SEC Academic Honor Roll three years in a row, Grimes graduated just shy of a 4.0, which the accounting major said was one of her biggest accomplishments.
"Soccer always put grades first," Grimes said. "When I was there, soccer was the always the sport with the highest GPA, and I was super proud of that."
Grimes joined the Bulldogs in 2010 after winning a state title and being one of 37 female athletes nationwide named to the 2009 NSCAA/Adidas High School Scholar All-America team.
"As soon as I stepped on campus for my unofficial visit, I remember telling my parents that this is where I wanted to be," Grimes said. "I remember seeing the cowbells going crazy, and I just felt the huge family atmosphere."
Grimes started her collegiate career with stellar numbers in 2010. Not only did she start all 20 games for the Bulldogs, but she also logged a team-high 1,724 minutes on the Bulldog back line.
In her sophomore year, Grimes scored her first career goal in the tie against Troy. Throughout the year, the young defender totaled five shots. Grimes started on the back line in all but one game and once again earned a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
As she transitioned to being an upperclassman, Grimes started to realize what it meant to be a leader on the team. In her second season as team captain, she was motivated to keep the program moving on a constant up rise.
"When I was a freshman and sophomore, I remember so many girls that I had looked up to," Grimes said. "When they voted for me to be captain, it was one of the greatest honors ever. So, when I was an upperclassman, I wanted to make sure that I did the same thing to empower everyone on the team to look up to me, on and off the field, like the upperclassmen had shown me."
As a junior in 2012, Grimes was ready to pad her stats a few more times. She posted a career-high in assists and points with four while leading a defense that posted six shutouts. She recorded two assists against South Alabama and was named to the Bulldog Classic All-Tournament Team.
"I'm so proud to be able to say that I played soccer at MSU," Grimes said. "The bond that I have created with the girls is indescribable. Now being an ex-college athlete, I feel like I have a huge leg up on teamwork, commitment, and leadership. These all play a huge role in my day-to-day life now."
Grimes closed her career with 11 points across 74 starts, which ranks third in school history. She was named to four regular-season all-tournament teams and helped the Bulldogs post 16 shutouts.
