STARKVILLE -- Fans had an exciting first look at the 2019-20 Mississippi State women's basketball team, as the Bulldogs hosted their Maroon-White Scrimmage in front of a lively crowd at Humphrey Coliseum Thursday night.
Â
State scrimmaged against itself for two quarters before combining the two squads to take on the men's team for three quarters.
Â
"We had more fans tonight than we had during our first game in 2012 when we beat Houston," said head coach Vic Schaefer. "I really appreciate all our fans coming out tonight and supporting our girls. It was great to get out there and get some of the jitters tonight. We will go look at the film, and as we always say, the film doesn't lie."
A pair of freshmen led the way in scoring, as Rickea Jackson and JaMya Mingo-Young chipped in 18 points each. Jackson added eight rebounds, five assists and three steals for the evening. Mingo-Young was on fire for the first two quarters, scoring all 18 of her points during the periods while shooting 7-of-9 from the field.
Â
Jessika Carter had a solid night in the paint, recording 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting, eight rebounds, three blocks and a steal. Jordan Danberry, Jayla Hemingway and Xaria Wiggins each chipped in 14 points.
Â
Myah Taylor finished the night with 13 points, five assists, five rebounds and five steals. Sidney Cooks, who will have to sit out this year due to transfer rules, totaled 11 points, while Andra Espinoza-Hunter added 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers.
Â
Mississippi State hosts defending Division II national champion Lubbock Christian on Nov. 4 for an exhibition before officially opening its 2019-20 campaign at home on Nov. 9 against Southern Miss.
Â
With 15 opportunities to watch the Bulldogs in Humphrey Coliseum during the 2019-20 schedule, season tickets are $150 for 200 level side court reserved seats and general admission is $85.
