Nationally-Televised Battle of the Bulldogs Set for Sunday
October 19, 2019 | Soccer
by Brian Ogden, Assistant Coordinator/Communications
STARKVILLE – Two Bulldog squads that are tied in the SEC standings will play a crucial soccer match on Sunday in Starkville. Mississippi State will host Georgia at 4 p.m. CT with the contest airing on ESPNU.
MSU will be celebrating "Soctoberfest" and giving away free pretzels and pint glasses with the MSU soccer crest on them. Both HailState Rewards and Bully's Kids Club points have been tripled for this match. Sunday's game is part of a larger perfect attendance challenge encompassing all MSU athletic events this weekend. One fan with perfect attendance will win a limited edition Dak Prescott football jersey.
State snapped an eight-match losing streak to the other Bulldogs in their last meeting, and MSU will look to claim consecutive victories for the second time in series history. With a win, MSU will reach the 10-point mark for the first time since 2015 and just the sixth time in its history.
"We've talked a lot about narrowing our focus all season and just concentrating on the next opponent," head coach James Armstrong said. "We've had a nice amount of time now to focus on Georgia. They're neck-and-neck with us in points, so they'll be looking at this as a must-win game. We're looking forward to having a really loud, big home crowd."
Georgia returns all 11 starters from a year ago and has already matched its highest win total since 2014 with six victories. The Bulldogs from Athens have held nine of their opponents to 10 shots or fewer, and average just 8.7 shots allowed per game.
MSU became just the fourth team to score against No. 8/17 Arkansas in its last match. State has scored 21 goals on the year with MaKayla Waldner finding the net eight times. Waldner is just three points shy of posting the 10th 20-point season in program history. She could also become just the fifth Bulldog to score 10 goals in a campaign and the first since Elisabeth Sullivan scored 16 in 2013.
