STARKVILLE – All of the preseason preparation culminates this weekend as the Mississippi State women's golf team heads to East Lansing, Mich., to tee off the 2018-19 season at the prestigious Mary Fossom Invitational.
The Bulldogs will play 54 holes over two days at the Par-72, 6,315-yard Forest Akers West Golf Club against a loaded 16-team field that includes fellow SEC foes Florida and Georgia, four teams ranked in the preseason Top 30 and seven teams coming off an NCAA Tournament run.
The action begins with 36 holes on Saturday beginning at 7:30 a.m. CT. Teams will play the 18-hole final round on Sunday. Live stats can be found at GolfStat.com.
Ninth-year head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm and first-year assistant Kortnie Maxoutopoulis feel the Bulldogs will be up for the challenge as they take a talented squad to the Michigan State-hosted event looking to set the bar for the upcoming season.
"Our team has been working hard for this moment, and they are excited to get the season started," Brown-Lemm said. "We are so proud of how our players have committed themselves to the process and our core values. We have two freshmen making their debuts this weekend, but they have experience in big tournaments and an outstanding group of veterans to support them. This is going to be a great tournament to challenge our team, and we are excited to get going on Saturday."
Heralded freshmen Hannah Levi and Lauren Miller make their Bulldog debuts in the season opener. Both bring a competitive edge to Brown-Lemm's squad coming out of high school as world-class junior golfers.
Levi, a Top 30 junior golfer from the "Magnolia State," makes the transition to the college game after winning three-straight state titles at D'Iberville High School. Miller, a Niceville, Fla., product, makes her Bulldog debut after capping her high school career as the third-ranked golfer in the state of Florida.
A trio of veterans will be in the lineup to help the rookies in the transition to the collegiate level. Senior Katie Holt brings veteran leadership following a standout junior season that saw her lead the Dawgs last season with 75.2 stroke average.
Juniors Clara Moyano and Ela Grimwood join Holt in the lineup after both gained valuable experience with the Bulldogs a year ago. Moyano played in six events in her first season with the Bulldogs, while Grimwood saw action seven times.
