STARKVILLE – Mississippi State soccer's Zakirah McGillivary has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week the conference office announced on Monday.
Â
McGillivary scored her first career goal on Thursday at Memphis. She chased down a loose ball for a one-on-one with the goalkeeper and beat her low to the right. Earlier in the game, she picked up an assist on senior Brook McKee's goal to give her three total points on the night.
Â
The Brooklyn, N.Y., native followed that performance with the game-winning goal on Sunday at South Alabama. With sophomore Gabriella Coleman dribbling up the wing, McGillivary cut to the top of the box to receive a pass which she turned and fired past the keeper.
Â
"Zakirah has shown improvement over the past week, and it was demonstrated on the field," head coach Tom Anagnost said. "She has improved her commitment and focus on what we are doing, and it has paid off for her and our team. I'm proud of her. She deserves this award."
Â
The Bulldog forward is the first State player to earn Freshman of the Week honors since Honeye Heydari on Sept. 4, 2012. Heydari scored three goals on 10 shot attempts that week while playing against Louisiana-Monroe and Georgia State.
Â
MSU is back in action in Starkville on Thursday when the Bulldogs host Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. CT. On Sunday, MSU will hold senior day festivities before facing Austin Peay at 1 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
