MOBILE, Ala. – Mississippi State's soccer team, off to a 3-0-0 start, will play at South Alabama on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. The Jaguars are currently undefeated in 2018 and are 16-2-1 in their last 19 games dating back to last season.
Â
"South Alabama is a winning program that is currently undefeated," head coach Tom Anagnost said. "It's another very tough, challenging game for us."
Â
MSU is coming off a 5-2 win at Memphis on Thursday night that saw the Bulldogs put all six of their shots on goal. It was the first time a State team had put all of their shots on target since a 1-0 loss at South Carolina on Oct. 13, 2006.
Â
The game also marked the fewest number of shots needed to score five or more goals in school history. Previously, the program's lowest shot total in a five-goal game was 13 against Arkansas State on Sept. 4, 2014.
Â
South Alabama is the most-common non-conference opponent in school history, with the Bulldogs holding a 7-5-1 edge in the all-time series. A State win would push the Jaguars into a tie with Southern Miss for MSU's most-defeated opponent in program history (eight games).
Â
After posting a strong defensive season last year, the Bulldogs have used an explosive offense to win their first three matches. State is on a seven-game streak of scoring first and is 5-1-1 in that span. The Bulldogs have scored within the first five minutes in each of the last five games.
Â
MSU is tied for second in the SEC in goal scoring (11) while being led by MaKayla Waldner whose four goals are tied for the NCAA lead. On the defensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs have held opponents to just 3.3 shots on goal per game this year.
Â
Sunday's match will be broadcast online through JagNationTV.com. Next week, the Bulldogs will return home for two matches in Starkville, including senior day on Sept. 2, against Austin Peay.
