STARKVILLE – After wrapping up its first day of classes, the Mississippi State soccer team will travel to Memphis, Tennessee, on Wednesday night to meet Memphis on Thursday.
Â
The Tigers are receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll and opened the season with two 4-0 wins last weekend. Memphis saw six different players score and earned two conference player of the week honors.
Â
"Memphis is a great team," head coach Tom Anagnost said. "They beat us in the spring, and they have a lot of talent. (Head coach) Brooks Monaghan does a wonderful job there, and it will definitely be our most formidable test thus far."
Â
Despite playing exhibitions the past two years, the Bulldogs haven't officially faced Memphis in a decade. Their last regular-season meeting came on Sept. 19, 2008. MSU dropped that contest 2-1. Memphis holds a four-game winning streak and leads 7-5-2 in the all-time series.
Â
The Tigers finished 2017 ranked No. 51 in the RPI, just six spots below State.
Â
MSU has shut out three consecutive opponents, dating back to 2017. That is the program's longest streak since 2012 when the Maroon and White blanked six straight opponents. The Bulldogs are one of 46 teams left in the NCAA this year that have yet to allow a goal.
Â
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT tomorrow, and the match will be broadcast online through the Memphis Tiger Network. MSU will then head to Mobile, Alabama, to face South Alabama on Sunday afternoon.
