STARKVILLE, Miss. – Three Mississippi State baseball alumni will head to Washington D.C., July 15-17 to represent their respective organizations in Major League Baseball All-Star Game festivities.
As announced on Sunday, Boston Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland will play for the American League in the MLB All-Star Game.
In addition, Dakota Hudson and Nathaniel Lowe will play for the United States team against the world's best up-and-coming minor league talent in the MLB All-Star Futures Game.
Both games will take place in Washington D.C., at Nationals Park. The Futures Game is scheduled for July 15 at 3 p.m. CT on MLB Network, while the MLB All-Star Game is set for July 17 at 7 p.m. CT on FOX.
Moreland's selection is the first of his nine-year career. An Amory, Miss., native, Moreland has provided valuable offensive production for Boston this season, tallying 11 home runs and 43 RBIs with a .288 batting average. The 32-year old spent seven seasons with the Texas Rangers, where he won a Gold Glove in 2016 before signing with the Red Sox in 2017.
Moreland becomes the ninth former Diamond Dawg to be named an all-star, the 23rd total selection and the first since Jonathan Papelbon represented the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2015 contest.
Moreland wore Maroon and White from 2005-07 and was drafted by the Rangers in the 17th round of the 2007 MLB Draft. He made his MLB debut in 2010. In his final season with MSU, Moreland batted .343 with 10 homers and 62 RBIs as a member of the 2007 College World Series team.
Dakota Hudson and Nathaniel Lowe are the first Bulldogs to play in a Futures Game since Hunter Renfroe in 2016.
Hudson earned the spot with dominance on the mound for the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds of the St. Louis Cardinals organization. In 17 starts, Hudson has won a Triple-A best 12 games while claiming a 2.42 ERA that is good for fourth.
In June, Hudson went 5-0 with a 1.06 ERA on his way to being named the Cardinals' Minor League Pitcher of the Month and the starter for the Pacific Coast League All-Star team.
Nathaniel Lowe keeps swinging a hot bat in the Tampa Bay Rays' system for the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits after being called up from the Single-A Charlotte Stone Crabs. Through 27 games with Montgomery, Lowe has hit seven home runs to go along with 27 RBIs and a .327 batting average.
Hudson and Lowe were both stars on State's 2016 SEC Championship team as each player earned All-America honors from at least one national publication.
