Men’s Tennis: Summer Pro Circuit Update—June
July 06, 2018 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – A doubles title and deep runs by Mississippi State men's tennis rising senior Nuno Borges highlight the first month of summer competition for five members of the Bulldog squad.
The two-time All-American Borges continued his success in international competition, notching his second straight doubles title in the Portugal F9 Futures, this time against the fourth-seeded French duo of Romain Bauvy (ATP doubles 1066) and Hugo Voljacques (312), notching a 6-4, 6-4 triumph.
Borges also reached the singles final in event in his native Portugal, breezing through the main draw to set up a battle with the top-ranked junior in the world, Chun Hsin Tseng of Taiwan (ATP 727). There, Tseng took the title with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Borges. On his way to the finals of the event for the second year in a row, the rising MSU senior knocked off a pair of opponents ranked in the top 600, including top-seeded Frenchman Baptiste Crepatte (423).
The following week in the Setúbal Open (Portugal F10 Futures), Borges once again got off to a hot start, reaching the doubles final for the second straight week. However, he and partner Francisco Cabral dropped an incredibly tight 7-5, 2-6, 10-8 three-setter to the top-seeded Guatemalan pair of Christopher Diaz-Figueroa (ATP doubles 358) and Wilfredo Gonzalez (443).
After dropping a hard-fought decision in the final qualifying round in his first tournament of the summer, MSU junior-to-be and NCAA Singles All-American Giovanni Oradini found himself as an automatic qualifier for the main draw in Setúbal, joining Borges in the singles field. There, the Italian breezed past his first round foe en route to an appearance in the Round of 16, where he dropped a tough 6-3, 6-4 match to the top-seeded Crepatte.
Bulldogs Niclas Braun, Florian Broska and NCAA Doubles All-American Strahinja Rakic all tallied qualifying draw victories, including Rakic advancing to the singles main draw at the Hungary F4 Futures tournament in Gyula, Hungary. Rakic also earned a victory in the Budapest Open (Hungary F5 Futures) the following week, where he reached the second round of qualifying.
Both Braun and Broska earned a pair of wins in their lone ITF tournaments in June, reaching the third round of qualifying before dropping tough decisions.
Players earn ranking points on the professional circuit by winning main draw matches in these events, as an accumulation of points leads to an ATP world ranking.
