Hudson Becomes 59th Bulldog To Reach MLB With Cardinals Call-Up
July 27, 2018 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – A first-round draft pick after a stellar 2016 season with Mississippi State, starting pitcher Dakota Hudson has received his Major League Baseball call-up by the St. Louis Cardinals just over two years later.
The Cardinals made the move official on Friday, adding Hudson to their active roster.
The 34th overall pick in 2016, Hudson is set to be the first of a program-record 11-player Diamond Dawg draft class to make his MLB debut.
Hudson follows right behind Brandon Woodruff, who made his MLB debut almost one year ago on August 4, 2017. In a start on the mound against the Tampa Bay Rays, Woodruff threw 6.1 innings, striking out six batters while allowing no runs.
Hudson has made a strong case for his promotion all season long, racking up 13 wins to lead the Pacific Coast League. In June, Hudson posted a 5-0 record to go along with a 1.06 ERA. His 2.50 season ERA is third in the league.
On July 15, Hudson pitched in the MLB All-Star Futures Game against the world's best minor league talent alongside former MSU teammate Nate Lowe. Entering as a reliever, he pitched a perfect inning, striking out a batter and inducing two groundouts.
St. Louis' newest starter wore maroon and white for three seasons from 2014-16. In his final season at State, Hudson pitched himself to a 9-5 record as MSU's Friday-night starter. Hudson garnered first-team All-SEC honors, was named an All-American by five publications and was the SEC pitcher of the week in three different months with a 2.55 ERA and 115 strikeouts over 113.0 innings pitched.
Four former Bulldogs -- Jacob Robson, Ben Bracewell, Zac Houston and Evan Mitchell -- are all playing in Triple-A and awaiting their call-up to the Show.
