July 14, 2018 | Track & Field
LONDON, U.K. – Mississippi State senior javelin thrower Curtis Thompson will represent the United States in the javelin throw at the inaugural Athletics World Cup tomorrow afternoon in London, England.
Thompson, the school record holder and 2016 NCAA champion, will throw at 3:15 p.m. CT with the competition airing live on NBC's Olympic Channel. The broadcast will begin with the first event of the day at 1 p.m. A tape-delayed broadcast of Sunday's competition will air on NBC Sports at 5 p.m.
The Athletics World Cup is a first-of-its-kind event pitting the top athletes from eight nations against each other in a team format. Each participating nation was allowed to enter just one male and one female athlete in each event.
Events are scored in an 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 format rather than the more common 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 format used at the NCAA and SEC Championships. The team's scores are combined between the men's and women's events to declare a single champion nation.
Team USA closed the first day of competition in first place with 108 points on Saturday.
Thompson boasts the No. 3 personal best in the men's javelin competition. The full list of javelin competitors and their personal bests is below.
