Bulldogs Open NCAA Outdoor Championships in Oregon on Wednesday
June 05, 2018 | Track & Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Mississippi State's track and field program will open competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., on Wednesday. The men's championships will be held on Wednesday and Friday with the women competing on Thursday and Saturday.
MSU's 10 men's entries tie the program for eighth in the nation and give it the potential for up to 90 points. The program's highest score at the Championships is 27 points set in 1982. The men have finished as high as second at the Championships in 1923.
"For the men's side, this is certainly one of the largest groups we've sent in a while," head coach Steve Dudley said. "With the javelin and Rhian Price-Weimer in the 1500m, we have a few good shots at individual titles and have a chance to score in nearly every other event we compete in."
Anderson Peters and Nicolas Quijera will go head-to-head for the javelin national championship on Wednesday evening. The Bulldog pair will face competition from Utah State's Sindri Gudmundsson as they are the only three men to have thrown over 79.00m (259-2) this year and advance to Eugene.
Semifinals for track events will be held on Wednesday and Thursday and air live on ESPN2. Finals action on Friday and Saturday will be carried on ESPN. All field events will be streamed live on ESPN3.
The Bulldogs will be challenged early, with tough draws in the semifinals.
In the 110m hurdles, Ro'Derick Spears is up against three athletes in his heat with faster season-best times, but the senior's personal best is faster than two of those. The top twoin each heat along with the next two fastest overall will make Saturday's final.
MSU is looking to be the first team in NCAA history with three men in the 400m hurdle finals, but all three will have to run in the same semifinal heat, complicating matters. Even if the Bulldogs take both automatic qualifiers by taking first and second in their heat, the third would need to advance on time.
The men's 4x400m relay is in a heat that could have just as easily been the final with seven of the eight teams, including MSU, ranked in the Top 15 this year. The Bulldogs are one of 11 schools to send both a men's and women's 4x400m relay to Oregon. The quartet of Alon Lewis, Monica Mosley, Riley White and Keturah Smith have already posted the Nos. 2 and 4 times in school history this year.
Rhianwedd Price-Weimer will face stiff competition in her 1500m semifinal on Thursday. The 2015 national champion is one of eight women among the Top 10 this season who will run in the first heat. Only a maximum of seven athletes, the top five in the heat and next two fastest overall, can advance to the final.
For the first time in a decade, MSU sent a pair of runners to Eugene for the men's 800m. Marco Arop, who holds the freshman record and is second in school history, will join Dejon Devroe, who was sixth at indoor nationals this season. The last duo to represent State was Golden Coachman and current assistant coach Chris Woods in 2008.
Rounding out the Bulldog men's 10 entries is Karson Kowalchuk. The sophomore will compete in the 100m after recording personal bests in three of his four races at the East Prelims.
