STARKVILLE, Miss. – Stephanie Peterson and 2016 NCAA javelin champion Curtis Thompson have been selected to represent Mississippi State on the 2018 SEC Community Service Team.
Peterson, a sophomore from Chattanooga, Tenn., led all track and field student-athletes with more than 95 hours of community service in the 2017-18 academic year. In her career, she has earned a Bulldog Honor Roll selection every semester, been named to the President's List twice and was named to the 2017 SEC Fall Honor Roll.
The distance runner, who qualified for the NCAA semifinals in the 10,000m, logged 30 hours this spring with StarkKids children's ministry at First Baptist Church Starkville. She led a group of 4th and 5th grade girls each Wednesday night and spent her spring break on a mission trip with the church.
"This was a great opportunity to put my life in perspective and check my priorities," Peterson said. "I'm so glad I was able to be a part and hope to get involved in more opportunities like this."
Thompson made the team for the second consecutive year after leading the Bulldog men in service hours. He is an active member of the M-Club and volunteers with Toys for Tots and Dance Marathon.
"I'm honored to receive this award again," Thompson said. "Being able to have an impact off the track means a lot to me."
MSU will compete at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 6-9.
