STARKVILLE, Miss. – While the 2018 season may be over, the awards have not stopped coming in for Mississippi State men's tennis junior Nuno Borges.
The two-time ITA Singles and 2018 Doubles All-American added another honor to his already illustrious career Thursday, being named a Second-Team Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-American. By earning the laurels, Borges becomes the 10th player in program history to be named an Academic All-American and the first since Rishab Agarwal in 2016.
"It's an honor to be recognized with such a prestigious award and I'm excited to keep working hard and keep developing," Borges said. "This award is a great motivation for me to keep going."
Since joining the Bulldogs in spring of 2016, Borges combined his stellar on-court performance with arguably an even better performance in the classroom, tallying a 3.84 grade-point average over his three years in Starkville as a kinesiology major.
On the court, Borges became just the third player in SEC history to earn multiple SEC Player of the Year honors as well as the first to ever be named both Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He led the Bulldogs to their first NCAA quarterfinal showing in 20 years and the program's first SEC Tournament crown since 1996 while manning the top spot in both singles and doubles. He ended the 2017-18 season ranked No. 1 nationally in doubles and No. 4 in singles.
"This is yet another incredible honor for Nuno," head coach Matt Roberts said. "He is a great leader for us on the court and in the classroom. He is a great example of what being a student-athlete at MSU is all about and we're very proud of him."
Borges is a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and is expected to earn the billing once again in July. In May, Borges was honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association when he was named the national winner of the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. The last two seasons, Borges has also been the top student on his team, earning the men's tennis Newsom Award. In April, Borges was honored as the top male student-athlete by receiving the overall Newsom Award for all MSU men's sports.
