WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Just a day after receiving the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southern Region's Arthur Ashe, Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award, junior Nuno Borges can add the national award to his increasingly long list of accolades.
The two-time SEC Player of the Year and 2018 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, who received the honor Tuesday at the ITA awards banquet at Wake Forest's BB&T Field, becomes just the second Bulldog to earn the national award, joining Marco Baron (2001).
"This is such a tremendous honor for Nuno," head coach Matt Roberts said. "He exemplifies all of the qualities that are required for this award. He's an outstanding scholar-athlete with incredible character and is very involved in the community as well. He has been a great leader for us this year and I'm very proud of him."
The Arthur Ashe award is annually presented to those tennis student-athletes which exhibit outstanding on-court results, scholastic and extracurricular achievements, sportsmanship, leadership and character, and humanitarian concern.
Borges, who helped lead MSU's 2018 men's squad to an eighth consecutive NCAA appearance and its first NCAA quarterfinal appearance since 1998, has easily exemplified all of the qualities required for the award.
"I'm very thankful for this great honor," Borges said. "It's incredibly humbling to earn this award named after such a great tennis player. Hail State!"
The second-ranked Borges enters this week's NCAA Singles Championship as the No. 3 overall seed, while partnering up with Strahinja Rakic to form the top-seeded tandem in the doubles draw as well.
Borges was one of 11 members of the 2018 SEC Community Service Team for men's tennis. He has made a huge impact on the MSU campus and Starkville community since joining the squad in the spring of 2016. The junior has attended monthly M-Club meetings, while also serving in many community service efforts throughout the Starkville community.
In addition to his stellar work on the court and in the community, Borges earned MSU's men's sports overall Newsom Award in April—given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA.
Up Next For MSU…
The Bulldogs now set their sights on the 2018 NCAA Individual Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C., with Borges and sophomore Giovanni Oradini opening up play Wednesday in the singles championship. Borges and Rakic are set to open up the doubles draw Thursday.
