STARKVILLE, Miss. – For the ninth consecutive week, Mississippi State's men's track and field program is ranked in the Top 25.
The Bulldogs finished 11th at the SEC Championships over the weekend, scoring 39 points. MSU picked up points in five events, including multiple scorers in both the javelin and 400m hurdles. Eleven men recorded season-bests, while Charles Brockman III and Rasheed Tatham ran season-bests on back-to-back days in the 400m hurdles.
"Our athletes performed very well under extremely challenging circumstances this weekend," head coach Steve Dudley said. "It's not uncommon for athletes not to make the finals in our conference but still qualify for nationals. The SEC is just that good."
MSU's 400m hurdles runners are the No. 2 group in the nation. Three members of the Bulldogs' quartet scored at the conference championships last night. Rasheed Tatham leads the group at 51.05.
Marco Arop won a silver medal in the 800m on Sunday night, and the MSU 800m group is ranked 11th, nationally. His MSU freshman record of 1:47.45 is 13th in the country this season.
After running a school-record 13.65 in the 110m hurdles, Ro'Derick Spears is now No. 14 in the NCAA. The Bulldogs are ranked fifth in that event.
MSU has two javelin throwers in the Top Five of the NCAA. Anderson Peters leads all athletes after launching the implement an SEC Championship-record 82.04m (269-2) on Friday to win gold. Nicolas Quijera joined him on the podium in third and is fourth in the nation this season.
Fifteen Bulldogs are currently in qualifying position for the NCAA East Prelims in Tampa, Fla. on May 24-26. The official list of athletes accepted to the prelims will be released on Thursday.
