May 14, 2018 | Baseball
JACKSON, Miss. – Having claimed the 2016 Ferriss Trophy, Mississippi State junior Jake Mangum now has an opportunity to become a two-time Ferriss Trophy winner.
Awarded annually to the top college baseball player in Mississippi, Mangum is joined by Delta State's Zach Shannon, Ole Miss' Ryan Olenek and Southern Miss' Nick Sandlin and Luke Reynolds.
The five players and their coaches will attend a luncheon banquet held at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame on Monday, May 21. This year marks the 15th annual Ferriss Trophy presentation and is named after Diamond Dawg and Boston Red Sox legend David "Boo" Ferriss.
"Having grown up in Mississippi, I know how much Mr. Ferriss truly means to the sport of baseball and to our state," said Mangum. "Being associated with this award, along with being named a finalist for the second time is truly an honor."
Mangum currently leads the Diamond Dawgs in batting average (.342), runs (45), hits (76), doubles (19) and on-base percentage (.421). Mangum currently leads the Southeastern Conference in hits and doubles.
Six Diamond Dawgs have claimed the Ferriss Trophy in the previous 14 years of the award's presentation (Brent Rooker – 2017, Jake Mangum, – 2016, Hunter Renfroe – 2013, Chris Stratton – 2012, Ed Easley – 2007, Thomas Berkery – 2006).
