Nicolas Quijera Named SEC Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State senior javelin thrower Nicolas Quijera has been chosen as the SEC Men's Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year in a vote of the league's head coaches.
Quijera is the fourth Bulldog to win the SEC accolade in the 2017-18 academic year. He joins Mallory Eubanks (soccer), Blair Schaefer (women's basketball) and Nuno Borges (men's tennis) to give MSU its largest collection of SEC Scholar-Athletes since the award began in 2003-04.
"It's great news for our program," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "We're extremely proud. The kid has a 3.89 GPA, so he's more than deserving. When you add that to everything he's done in competition it's easy to pick him."
The economics major from Pamplona, Spain, is MSU track and field's second winner of the award, following Cornelia Griesche who was selected during the 2016 indoor season.
"This is the reason I'm in the United States and not at home right now," Quijera said. "I want to be both things, a scholar and an athlete. It's an honor to be selected."
He is currently the No. 3 thrower in the NCAA and second in the conference. His personal-best throw of 79.75m (261-7) made MSU the first school in college history with three men over 79.00m (259-2) in its record books. All three of those athletes are currently on the roster.
Quijera's two-year career has been highlighted by five victories, an NCAA runner-up finish and the No. 3 spot in the school record books. His personal best is No. 26 in collegiate history and second among Spaniards all-time.
Florida's Anders Eriksson shared the men's award with Quijera. Georgia's Keturah Orji won the women's honor.
