April 09, 2018 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – With the 2018 regular season nearing its end, the 32nd-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (15-8, 6-6 SEC) fell to No. 7 Georgia (13-5, 8-3 SEC) 4-0 Monday at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
"Georgia played well today and we were a little shell shocked," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "It is the first match of the year where an opponent was able to dominate us in every way. We have to learn from it and do a better job if we find ourselves in a position like that again. We just have to believe we are capable of playing a higher level and call upon it when needed."
The Bulldogs of Athens came out dominant in doubles against the homestanding Bulldogs. Posting a score of 6-1 on court 3, UGA's Annette Goulak and Kennedy Shaffer ousted State's Sara Lizariturry and Anastasia Rentouli. Following at No. 2, Georgia's 18th-ranked Mariana Gould and Katarina Jokic posted the same score against MSU's Magda Adaloglou and Janina Braun to clinch the doubles point and give UGA an early 1-0 lead.
Georgia continued to control the match in singles, taking all six first sets.
First off the courts at the No. 5 position, UGA's Gould downed State's Lizariturry 6-1, 6-2, extending the Georgia lead to 2-0. On court 6, Georgia Bulldog Morgan Coppoc held off MSU's Khrystyna Vozniak 6-3, 6-3 to establish a 3-0 lead for UGA.
Clinching the match on court 1, UGA's eighth-ranked Jokic bested State's Madison Harrison 6-3, 6-3 to secure the 4-0 victory for Georgia.
The remaining matches were suspended with Georgia holding set leads in all. On court 2, UGA's No. 57 Shaffer led MSU's Braun 6-1, 5-1. At No. 3, Georgia's No. 86 Marta Gonzalez held a 6-3, 4-0 lead against State's Adaloglou. On court 4, UGA's Elena Christofi led the Maroon & White's Rentouli 6-0, 4-4.
