OXFORD, Miss. – With just two matches remaining in Southeastern Conference play, the seventh-ranked Mississippi State men's tennis team (16-1, 10-0 SEC) picked up yet another solid win to remain unbeaten in league action, downing No. 35 Ole Miss (13-10, 3-8) 5-2 in Oxford on Sunday.
MSU continued its remarkable win streak – now at 12 straight - with the victory, including 10 in a row in league play. The Bulldogs remain tied atop the SEC standings with No. 5 Texas A&M, who notched a 6-1 decision against No. 27 South Carolina on Sunday. The Bulldogs and Aggies square off this Friday, April 13, in College Station at 6 p.m. CT.
"I am incredibly proud of how we competed today in a tough road environment and also how we handled all of the adversity we faced this weekend," fourth-year head coach Matt Roberts said. "We had to push back Friday's match and then play two days in a row, which we hardly ever do. I'm very impressed with how well we handled all of the schedule changes and everything else this weekend to come away with two great wins."
The Bulldogs continued their hot doubles play Sunday by taking two doubles courts quite quickly. State's 46th-ranked Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic gave MSU a quick advantage with a 6-2 win on court 1 against the 56th-ranked Rebel tandem of Grey Hamilton and Tim Sandkaulen.
Then, the 42nd-ranked Bulldog duo of Niclas Braun and Giovanni Oradini kept rolling with a dominant 6-1 victory over Zvonimir Babic and Filip Kraljevic on court 2 to clinch the doubles point for the Bulldogs. Braun and Oradini have not lost in dual match play and are riding an 11-match win streak. MSU is also a perfect 15-0 at the No. 2 doubles position this season. At the clincher, Ole Miss' Fabian Fallert and Finn Reynolds led MSU's Florian Broska and Trevor Foshey 5-1 when their match was suspended.
The Rebels knotted it up at 1-all when Reynolds downed MSU freshman Arvid Nordquist 6-2, 6-3 on court 6 in the first singles match complete. The tie would not last long, though, as State's fourth-ranked Borges knocked off UM's No. 30 Sandkaulen on court 1 by a 7-5, 6-1 mark to give MSU the lead for good.
On court 5, the rookie Broska expanded the Bulldogs' lead with a solid 6-3, 6-2 win against Babic, followed closely by another match-clinching win by the 23rd-ranked Oradini on court 2. Oradini downed the Rebels' Fallert 6-3, 6-1 to put State ahead 4-1.
After clinching the match, State's Rakic picked up a tightly-contested three-set win against Kraljevic on court 3 after dropping the first frame 7-5. The 83rd-ranked Rakic took set 2 6-2 and dominated the super tiebreaker 10-2 to come away with his sixth-straight win – 5-7, 6-1, 1-0(2). The Rebels took the final point of the afternoon when Hamilton held off MSU's Braun for a 7-6(2), 7-5 victory at No. 4.
With the win, State broke a two-match Ole Miss win streak in the series and has now won seven of the last 11 against the Rebels. Roberts also earned his 75th career victory as the Bulldogs' head coach with the win.
"Our guys made a push on the big points, starting with doubles and it carried over into singles," Roberts said. "We're very confident in all three doubles spots and on all of our singles courts right now. This is exactly where we want to be at this point in the season and we can't wait for another great week of practice before an exciting final weekend of the regular season."
Next Up For MSU…
MSU will continue its road swing to close out the regular season next weekend. First, the Bulldogs will travel to College Station, Texas, to take on No. 5 Texas A&M in a key top-10 SEC matchup at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 13. After taking on the Aggies, State will make the trip over to Baton Rouge to face LSU in the regular season finale at noon the following Sunday.
