TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Honors continue to roll in for Mississippi State's Nuno Borges, as the junior was named the Southeastern Conference's Scholar-Athlete of the Year Friday just before the Bulldogs' conference championship opener against Ole Miss.
The kinesiology major from Maia, Porto, Portugal, has shined in the classroom, owning a sparkling 3.84 cumulative GPA in the clinical exercise physiology program. He becomes just the second Bulldog to earn the prestigious honor, but the second in the last three seasons. Rishab Agarwal took home SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year laurels in 2016.
"Nuno has accomplished so much this season not only on the court, but as a student and as a person," head coach Matt Roberts said. "He leads by example and sets an excellent example for our players, especially the younger guys. I'm proud of Nuno and he is very deserving of this recognition."
Since arriving at MSU in the spring of 2016, Borges has had a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher every term and has been a mainstay on the SEC Academic Honor Roll. He is also a two-time men's tennis Newsom Award winner (best GPA in each MSU sport) and took home the overall Newsom Award for MSU men's sports on Monday. Borges was also tabbed an ITA Scholar-Athlete following the 2016 and 2017 campaigns.
On the court, the All-American Borges leads MSU with a 22-4 record in singles play, tallying 18 ranked victories this season going into Friday's match against the Rebels. He also has climbed as high as second in the nation for his outstanding singles play, where he currently stands. In doubles, he is currently ranked a career-best 15th as well, with partner Strahinja Rakic.
Borges was also named to his second straight SEC Community Service Team on Tuesday.
