STARKVILLE, Miss. – For the second year in a row, Mississippi State men's tennis standout Nuno Borges has been named to the Southeastern Conference's Community Service Team.
All SEC-sponsored sports have had a Community Service Team since 2004, with at-large teams for men's and women's teams being chosen from 1999-2003.
"I am very thankful for this honor," Borges said. "I enjoy every opportunity I have to give back to this great community and university that I love so much. MSU is my family, so it always feels great to give back whenever I can. Hail State!"
Borges was one of 11 members of the SEC Community Service Team for men's tennis, with Tennessee and Texas A&M not submitting any members for the 2018 season.
A native of Maia, Porto, Portugal, Borges has made a huge impact on the MSU campus and Starkville community since joining the Bulldogs in the spring of 2016. The junior has taken part in many initiatives around the university to help grow the game of tennis. He has also donated his time at M-Club meetings in an effort to better student-athlete relationships.
"Nuno is very deserving of this award," fourth-year head coach Matt Roberts said. "He represents our school and team so well. He's not just a leader on the court, but also in the classroom and in the community."
In addition to his volunteer work, Borges is an outstanding student, having won MSU's Newsom Award (given to the top student-athlete for each team on campus) after his stellar work in the classroom, on the court and in the community. Borges was also awarded the men's sports overall Newsom Award on Monday.
On the court, Borges leads MSU with a 22-4 record in singles play, tallying 18 ranked victories this season. He also has climbed as high as second in the nation for his outstanding singles play.
Next Up For MSU…
Borges and his Bulldog teammates will be back in action at noon Friday in Tuscaloosa, Ala., in the quarterfinals of the 2018 SEC Championship. MSU, seeded second, will face the winner of Thursday's match between seventh-seeded South Carolina and No. 10 seed Ole Miss. Tickets can be purchased online at RollTide.comand are also available at the gate.
