Holt Paces MSU In Round One Of SEC Championship
April 18, 2018 | Women's Golf
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior Katie Holt's veteran experience showed Wednesday as her 73 led the Mississippi State women's golf team to a 20-over 308 following opening-round play at the SEC Women's Golf Championship in Birmingham, Ala.
The Clermont, Fla., native's day helped MSU wrap the opening day at the par-72, 6,253-yard Greystone Golf and Country Club in ninth place, two strokes out of the Top 8. The Top 8 at the conclusion of Friday's final round of stroke play advance to the match play portion over the weekend.
"The course was playing a little more difficult today than we expected it too," Katie Holt said. "It was windy and conditions were a little tough at first. The greens were rolling really nice today though. I stayed extremely patient today. There was a lot of really close putts today, but with a lot of close putts, you have a lot of tap-in-pars. It was fun to get out here and play a good round. We are looking forward to the rest of the week, and hopefully match play."
Holt regrouped following a bogey on her second hole of the day, the 519-yard, par-5 11th, and shot even par for her final 16 holes to end the day 12th at 1-over-par.
Athena Yang and Blair Stockett both both carded 6-over 78s to tie for 38th, while Aubree Jones and Ela Grimwood each shot a 79 to sit in a tie for 46th.
Second-round play from Birmingham is slated for an 8:30 start on Thursday.
