STARKVILLE, Miss. – After shattering Mississippi State's freshman record in the javelin by more than six meters, Anderson Peters has been named the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Men's National Athlete of the Week.
"This is much deserved for him," throws coach April Thomas said. "He's a kid that works extremely hard, and I'm very proud of him."
Peters launched the implement 81.95m (268-10), a mark that leads the NCAA and ranks fourth in the world this season. His throw ranks second in MSU history and is the eighth-best mark in collegiate history.
"I am grateful to be awarded the national athlete of the week," Peters said. "This is a great start to my track and field career as a Bulldog. The Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays was a good meet with extremely good weather conditions. It was perfect for javelin throwing."
Peters is just the second Bulldog to win the award and the first since Brandon McBride in 2016. The award was created in 2015. Javelin throwers have taken the award in each of the first two weeks of the 2018 outdoor season.
