MSU Wraps Up First Round In Auburn
March 18, 2018 | Women's Golf
AUBURN, Ala. – Mississippi State women's golf ended opening-round play at the Evans Derby Experience in Auburn, Ala., tied for 11th place after firing a 14-over 302 Sunday afternoon.
"This tournament is full of very good teams," MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "We are playing hard and seeing improvements. Our key is cutting out the one bad hole per player. We had two three-putt triples, pair that with missing a few too many greens and not getting up and down, it makes for several wasted shots. In the tough schedule we carry, you can't make those mistakes and perform at a high level."
Sophomore Ela Grimwood led MSU at the Auburn University Club with a 2-over 74 that put her into a tie for 39th heading into Monday's second round.
Katie Holt opened play with a 75, while sophomore Clara Moyano finished with birdies on Nos. 6 and 7 and pars on her final two holes to wrap the day with a 76.
Aubree Jones found the going tough at the start of her round, but the Bulldog freshman showed her resilience and re-grouped after the turn to shoot 1-under on the back nine en route to carding a 5-over 77 for the round.
Athena Yang carded a 78, while individuals Blaise Carabello and Kendall Wisenbaker each notched 77s.
