Four-Run Fourth Secures Series Victory For No. 21 MSU
March 11, 2018 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – A three-run home run by Rowdey Jordan was the big blow as Mississippi State beat Utah Valley 5-3 to take a three-game weekend baseball series, Sunday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field.

While the Bulldogs struggled to break out against the Wolverines, the home run was big for the home team. A two-run home run by Luke Alexander propelled the Bulldogs to a 4-2 win in Friday's second game.

Utah Valley won the series opener, 2-1 in 11 innings Friday afternoon.

"I'm proud of the win," MSU head coach Gary Henderson said. "We had some timely hits and our bullpen threw strikes. Each of our four relievers came in and did what they were supposed to do. Jacob (Billingsley) allowed one run over five innings on what was not his best day. We will take that."

In Sunday's victory, MSU (10-6) erased a 1-0 deficit on an RBI-double by Tanner Allen in the third inning.

In the fourth inning, the damage took place with two outs. Luke Alexander reached on an error, then, after back-to-back outs, Dustin Skelton drew a walk. Jordan broke the 1-1 tie with his shot to right center.

An RBI-single by Hunter Stovall capped the scoring in that inning.

Utah Valley (5-9) scored twice in the sixth inning but a double play ball worked the Bulldogs out of the eighth inning and the Wolverines stranded one runner in the ninth inning.

MSU finished with nine hits and stranded eight base runners. Stovall, Allen and Jordan each had multiple hits.

For the Bulldogs, Jacob Billingseley (2-0) drew the start and earned the win. He allowed four hits and one run (earned), with four strikeouts and a walk. Denver McQuary threw an inning, while Cole Marsh worked 1.1 innings. Zach Neff got the double play ball in the only batter he faced in the eighth inning. JP France worked around the one-out double in the ninth inning for his first save.

David Modler, Trevor Peterson, Jackson Overlund and Ryan Eastburn each had two hits for the Wolverines. Walker Ramsey (1-3) pitched six innings and took the loss.
